OCI Policy Updates

OCI Renewal vs. Free Online Updates (Post-2021 Rules)

The Ministry of Home Affairs simplified OCI rules significantly in 2021. You usually do not need to apply for a brand new OCI card when you renew your British passport!

OCI Misc Services Portal →
Applicant Age Group When British Passport is Renewed What You Need to Do Cost & In-Person Visit?
Under 20 Years Old Each time a new passport is issued Upload new passport copy & photo online under OCI Misc Services. 100% FREE • No VFS visit needed
Turning 20 Years Old When obtaining the first new passport after reaching 20 years of age Mandatory one-time re-issuance of the physical OCI card. Apply for re-issuance via VFS. Paid fee • Submit via VFS

Great News for Diaspora Over 50: Under the old pre-2021 rules, senior citizens had to pay and apply for a brand new OCI card after turning 50. Under the current rules, you only need to complete the free online document upload on ociservices.gov.in. You keep your existing OCI booklet!
Renunciation & Surrender

Surrender of Indian Passport & Renunciation

Under the Indian Citizenship Act 1955, persons of Indian origin who acquire foreign nationality (e.g. British Citizenship) must surrender their Indian passport to the nearest Indian mission.

Always surrender your Indian passport immediately upon receiving your British Naturalisation Certificate!

Diaspora Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries answered by community volunteers and consular guidelines.

How do I prove my UK legal status now that physical BRP cards are phasing out?
Physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) expire on 31 December 2024 as the UK Home Office transitions to full digital immigration statuses (eVisa). For Indian passport and OCI filings, you must log into your UKVI account, generate a Digital Share Code (for "Work", "Something else" or immigration verification), and print the clear screenshot/summary showing your name, status, and valid visa expiry date alongside your physical expired/current BRP.
Can I travel to India if my Indian passport is surrendered but my OCI card has not arrived yet?
No, you cannot travel to India on an OCI application receipt alone. If your OCI card is still processing and you have already surrendered your Indian passport, you must apply for an Indian e-Visa on your British passport for urgent travel. You can enter India on the e-Visa, and have family securely courier your OCI card or collect it upon return.
Can I use my Life in the UK pass certificate for both ILR and British Citizenship?
Yes! The Life in the UK test pass result has no expiration date. Once passed for your Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) application, you keep the Unique Reference Number (URN) and reuse the exact same pass result when applying for British Citizenship / Naturalisation.
My child was born in the UK. Can they get an Indian passport and British passport together?
No. The Constitution of India and the Citizenship Act 1955 do not permit dual citizenship. If parents choose Indian citizenship for the child, the child must be registered on the MHA portal within 1 year and obtain an Indian passport. If the parents later decide to naturalise the child as a British citizen, the Indian passport must be surrendered, and an OCI card applied for.
What is the difference between FCDO Apostille and High Commission Consular Attestation?
The UK is a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention. UK public documents (such as UK Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, or documents notarized by a UK Notary Public) can be legalised by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) with an Apostille certificate. Indian authorities legally recognize FCDO Apostilled documents. Alternatively, Indian citizens can sign documents directly in front of a Consular Officer at the High Commission in London / Consulates in Birmingham and Edinburgh for consular attestation.
Is an appointment compulsory at VFS Global, or are walk-ins permitted?
Prior online appointment booking through VFS Global UK is mandatory for almost all consular services (Passports, OCI, Surrender, Visas). In rare, critical emergency situations (such as urgent bereavement with death certificate and ticket proof), walk-ins at the High Commission's Emergency Wing or designated VFS centers may be accommodated under the Emergency/Tatkaal queue.
